Our History

Our tradition of turning great ideas into viable enterprises began in 2005, when MidMichigan Innovation Center was founded as a subsidiary of MITECH+ to bring new technologies toward commercialization. With grant support from Dow and several Midland foundations, MMIC hit the ground running, accelerating the business growth of our member tenants and earning recognition from economic development groups such as Midland Tomorrow.

By 2008, member businesses were continuing to grow and “graduate” to sustainable success, and the original MMIC facility was at full occupancy. The BlueWater Angels investment group was formed as an MMIC partner to begin supporting the many new, high potential ventures with needed capital. MMIC also expanded its programming through events like the Boost! competition and Heading for the Big Leagues Entrepreneur Expo.

Thanks to a federal Economic Development Agency Grant and additional funding from local foundations, by 2011 MMIC had hired additional staff and opened a Traverse City office. In 2012, we moved to our new headquarters on Austin Street.

Today, we continue to find new, creative ways to support the education and growth of our member companies. We seek to create an even stronger sense of entrepreneurial community through our facilities, programming and network, and look forward to a continued development for small businesses and our economy.
